When Tony dropped off Tom's sleeping bag, Tom asked Tony what time he woke up in the morning. The only reason I could figure for him asking was he was either planning on calling us first thing in the morning or he was going to sleep in our yard and wanted to vacate before we woke up.
I feel terrible for thinking about this, but Tom has a history of squatting and now that we're attempting an exit strategy, I've been a bit worried about the outcome. We want the best for Tom and hope he lands on his feet soon, but I've been feeling increasingly uncomfortable about this situation.
But when Tom called us mid-morning, he had great news. He had a friend who was a mechanic out in Toelle who owed him a favor and said he'd take a look at the van. Tom just needed to get the van to Toelle. And as it just so happens, we're Premium AAA members which means we have towing services available all the way out there.
So an hour later I picked up Tom and Lucky - again at Beans & Brews. I wonder what they thought of this guy (who looks like Richard Drewfus) and his dog hanging out for a few days. Tom and Lucky got into my car, we went to the back of the parking lot to pick up his bag and sleeping bag that he had stashed behind a cement barrier and we headed towards our house.
A few minutes later the tow truck was at our house and they loaded up the van, Tom and Lucky and headed off toward their next adventure.
We haven't heard from him and we hope that no news is good news. Even if they do get the van running and able to pass inspection, I'm not sure what Tom will do as he doesn't have the money for registration or insurance.
So I expect we'll hear back from him sometime, but for now, I have to admit, it's a big relief.
